What Is ASM?

The Associated Students of Madison (ASM) is the official student body government of UW-Madison representing the needs of some 41,000+ students. Past victories for ASM include securing Madison Metro bus passes for all students, posting professor course evaluations online, lobbying for College Library (Helen C. White) to remain open 24 hours a day, winning a full Study Day every semester before final exams, opening Memorial Library for 24 hours for final exams, and planning "Shadow Day" for under represented high school students.

All students at UW-Madison are automatically members of ASM. ASM is a grassroots, volunteer and campaign driven organization that advocates for student issues and concerns on campus as well as at the state and national level. The heart and soul of ASM are our campaigns and committees that, through the efforts of volunteers and interns, organize around issues of social justice, affordable education, and student participation in major university decisions. ASM also appoints students to university committees to make sure that students' voices are heard in major decisions at the UW-Madison. Through ASM, students are appointed to the shared governance committees that guide the University.

ASM is divided into three basic branches:
1) The ASM Student Council, which serves as the governing body for the student government, is composed of 33 elected representatives from across campus. These representatives then elect the various chairs of the ASM who lead its work.
2) ASM Student Services Finance Committee (SSFC) is the branch of ASM that provides larger grants to organizations that have been declared eligible as student services. SSFC is annually charged with making recommendations to ASM Student Council on the allocation of the over $20 million in student segregated fees.
3) ASM Student Judiciary oversees ASM elections and resolves disputes between the Associated Students of Madison and other parties. Eight student justices appointed by the Nominations Board and Student Council comprise the Student Judiciary, serving two-year terms each.

Membership: How To Get Involved

There are four main ways to get involved with ASM: volunteer for a committee or campaign, take on a semester internship, become a student staff member, or serve on student council.

There are limitless opportunities to volunteer for ASM for ongoing committees including Academic Affairs, Campus Relations, Diversity, Legislative Affairs, and Shared Governance. In addition to these long-term committees, ASM also works on short-term campaigns chosen each year by the Student Council.

ASM also offers 2 – 3 credit internships. Internships offer students exciting opportunities to build skills, meet new people, and make an impact on the university and legislative policy. With the help of a professor sponsor, interns earn class credit while getting hands-on experience working for issues they care about!

Other ways to get involved in ASM include serving on the Student Council or working for ASM in a variety of staff positions.

At the beginning of each semester, ASM holds a large kickoff drive to get as many students involved in the organization as possible. To get involved, check out the ASM website at www.asm.wisc.edu or stop by our offices at 511 and 512 Memorial Union.

Student Organization Office Space Available

Need office space? Want access to computers and a mailbox? Interested in forming coalitions with other student organizations on campus? Now you can at the Student Organization Center in Union South. It includes a computer lab, desks, mailboxes and filing cabinets. Applications for space are available by stopping at ASM, 511 Memorial Union or on the ASM website at www.asm.wisc.edu.

ASM Officers

The ASM Student Council also appoints officers of the organization to help coordinate its activities and handle more administrative tasks. These people are excellent resources for questions about ASM, specific ASM resources or how to become involved in the organization.

ASM Campaigns and Committees

Here’s a listing of the campaigns and committees in ASM. As you can see, there are many ways that any student can become involved!

UHS/Student Activity Center Standing Board:

The UHS/Student Activity Center Committee is working to guide the construction of more student space on campus. The UHS/Student Activity Center is currently in construction phase at location of the former University Square.

Throughout the year the committee will work on fine tuning the details of the building including the interior design, the allocation of space, and the development of a plan as to how the space will be managed. The committee will also work to create a student-run business for the student-run business space of the Student Activity Center. The committee will meet Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm, Memorial Union TITU. For more information contact Chair Renee Mechanic at mechanic@wisc.edu.

Academic Affairs Committee:

The Academic Affairs Committee is committed to working on academic issues such as tuition, textbook costs, and the quality of classes. The committee presses academic departments to launch peer advising, published course evaluations online every semester, and is working on developing a textbook rental program.
Chair: Jessica Pavlic at jpavlic@wisc.edu

Finance Committee:

The ASM Finance Committee is responsible for ASM’s internal fiscal budget, as well as for providing Operations Grants, Travel Grants, and Event Grants to Registered Student Organizations.
Chair: Brittany Wiegand at blwiegand@wisc.edu

Student Services Finance Committee:

The SSFC is a branch of ASM that provides larger grants to organizations that have been declared eligible as student services. SSFC is annually charged with making recommendations to ASM Student Council on the allocation of the over $20 million in student segregated fees.
Chair: Alexander Gallagher at ahgallagher@wisc.edu

Shared Governance Committee:

The Shared Governance Committee appoints students to over 100 campus committees that make decisions about transportation, athletics, and campus life. It does so in the spirit of Wisconsin state statute 36.09(5), which guarantees students the right to have input in university decisions that affect their lives. Students often have to press administrators in order to have more than advisory authority over important decisions, and the Shared governance Committee constantly applies the necessary pressure to increase the power of students.
Chair: Jeffrey Wright at jawright2@wisc.edu

Diversity Committee:

The Diversity Committee advocates for an inclusive student government and UW campus. Initiating thought- and action-provoking programming throughout the year, the committee seeks to educate and motivate the student body at-large. By working on social justice issues for under-represented students, the committee works towards a welcoming campus climate for students who identify with a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, racial, sexuality, gender, ability, and socioeconomic groups. They also host an annual event called Shadow Day where minority high school students shadow a UW student and get college prep help.
Chair: Hannah Buck - hbuck@wisc.edu

Nominations Board:

The Nominations Board is responsible for filling vacant seats to ASM Student Council, appoints Student Judiciary, helps hire Diversity Liaisons and supervises ASM full-time staff. Members of this closed board are Student Council Representatives appointed by the Student Council.
Chair: Steven Lawrence at swlawrence@wisc.edu

Legislative Affairs Committee:

The Legislative Affairs Committee lobbies politicians at the local, state, and national level in order to adequately promote the student interest. The committee holds press conferences, forwards resolutions to the ASM Student Council, collaborates with other student organizations, and advocates for lower tuition, tenant rights, and other relevant legislative issues.
Chair: Hannah Karns at hkarns@wisc.edu

Campus Relations Committee:

The Campus Relations Committee serves as a public relations arm of ASM and continuously reaches out to the student body to promote activities or seek input. CRC enhances ASM’s visibility by facilitating communication between ASM and the student body, advertising ASM events, publicizing students’ issues, and coordinating media strategies for ASM.
Chair: Christie Penn - penn@wisc.edu
